(6.5) StadtFabrik INCLUSION Discussion

Without a doubt, a city with an increasing number of inhabitants can consider its resources to also include those people that have found refuge in European countries and cities in the past months and years. People who immigrate bring knowledge, new perspectives, cultural capital, and professional skills, as well as being highly motivated and eager to learn.

How can the cultural capital, how can the advantages of successful integration into our society be identified and cultivated?

What contribution can design make in order to moderate in the efforts surrounding the occupation and integration of refugees?

Experts from refugee projects and initiatives in Vienna and a representative of Austria’s Public Employment Service (AMS) were engaged in a discussion with designers about possible contributions by and new task areas for people in the design and creative fields:

Clemens Foschi (Caritas Service GmbH)

Emanuel Gollob & Georg Sampl (design collective “Františeks Praktikanten,” Vienna)

Karin Harather (“Displaced,” Institute of Art and Design, Vienna University of Technology)

Kai Themel (Public Employment Service Austria (AMS), skills checks).

Moderated by Harald Gründl, design theorist, head of IDRV– Institute of Design Research Vienna, designer (EOOS), Vienna
