Design Revolution Now!
20–29 September 2024
VIENNA DESIGN WEEK Festival Headquarters Landstraßer Gürtel 51, 1030 Wien
Curated by a temporary artists’ collective from the University of Applied Arts Vienna, A Designer’s Toolbox for Revolution was an exhibition held at the Festival Headquarters on Landstraßer Gürtel 51 as part of Vienna Design Week. The project, developed within Harald Gründl’s design theory course, presented a fresh, critical take on conventional design concepts and offered an open platform for alternative discourse. Moving away from solution-oriented design, the exhibition embraced an honest, exploratory approach to the field.

This event highlighted a wide range of design methods, reimagining the creative process as a toolkit and inviting visitors to explore, interact with, and engage deeply. The exhibition architecture, crafted entirely from repurposed cardboard, allowed guests to experience and experiment with the designer’s tools in a playful, immersive environment.

To enrich the visitor experience, the exhibition included a variety of engaging offerings, including workshops and guided tours. A Children’s Workshop introduced younger visitors to design practices, while a Dialogue Afternoon with Experts provided an intimate setting to discuss modern design perspectives with professionals. Multiple Guided Tours with the Curators provided insights into the concepts and creation of the exhibition, and additional workshops allowed attendees to experience hands-on design techniques and engage with materials in new ways. The event concluded with a Finissage and Deconstruction Workshop, celebrating the closing with a final interactive experience.
This first public presentation of the project introduced an honest, alternative approach to design, questioning traditional frameworks and inviting a broader discussion about what it means to design in today’s world.
