Regenerative Design
17–19 December 2024
Rathausgasse 3

The exhibition Dorf | Bau | Steine in St. Pölten showcases innovative approaches to sustainable and livable transformations of everyday, often overlooked architectural structures in rural communities. Developed and designed by students in the 3rd semester of the Master’s program in Interior Design & Visual Communication at the New Design University (NDU), the exhibition was created in collaboration with the Institute of Design Research Vienna (IDRV). Taking Orth an der Donau as a model community, the projects represent innovative solutions for the entire Danube region.
The projects adhere to the principles of regenerative design, as conceived by the IDRV under the leadership of Harald Gründl. They explore how seemingly mundane Dorf | Bau | Steine (village | building | stones) can be reimagined to contribute to the long-term viability and resilience of rural spaces.
This work is part of a larger context: the projects will also feature in Imagine: Coral Reef Regenerative Design, a traveling exhibition curated by IDRV in collaboration with the Department of International Cultural Affairs of the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Launching in Belgrade in February 2025, this exhibition aims to foster a global dialogue around regenerative design practices.
The St. Pölten exhibition invites visitors to rethink the potential of small-scale interventions in rural architecture. It offers a compelling vision of how these elements can shape the sustainable future of village life.
