(3.1) Regenerative Design Lab at Vienna Design Week

An interdisciplinary space for experimentation and new avenues of action in design: Under the direction of Harald Gründl, the Regenerative Design Lab at the Institute of Design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna combines design theory and history with individual and collective design practice. In collaboration with partners such as the Weltmuseum Wien, the ReGenerativa Future Platform, and Vitra, students explore regenerative design principles as the foundation for sustainable design practices. This gives rise to contributions, positions, and questions regarding design as a transformative practice.

Curated by the Institute of Design Research Vienna (IDRV), this exhibition brings together artifacts and fragments created over seven semesters in the Regenerative Design Lab by students and doctoral candidates. When contextualized, these works offer a snapshot of an evolving understanding of regenerative design.

Talk “Design Revolution Now! Regenerative Design Futures!”

The future in the year 2100 was the theme of the course “Design Revolution Now!” in the summer semester of 2026, in which students from various disciplines created short films. In this talk in German, Ulrike Kuch (Rector of the University of Applied Arts Vienna), Claudia Banz (Director of the Weltmuseum Wien), Harald Gründl (Head of the Regenerative Design Lab, Institute of Design), and students from the “Design Revolution Now!” course discuss the future of design education.

Talk “Regenerative Design Futures in India”

The Institute of Design Research Vienna (IDRV), through its curated exhibition “Imagine – Coral Reef. Regenerative Design” in Delhi, sought to foster an exchange with students from Sushant University through on-site workshops on the topic of regenerative design.

This exchange will be further deepened as part of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK. Following a brief introductory presentation of projects, Harald Gründl (Co-Director of the Institute of Design Research Vienna (IDRV)), Koshalpreet Kaur (Dean of the School of Design at Sushant University), and Shailja Sachan (200 Million Artisans) will discuss sustainable design, production, and lifestyle concepts.
